Important Info
  • Please make sure that a Great Dane puppy is right for you...don't
forget that a six month old Great Dane puppy can weigh almost a
hundred pounds.  Great Dane puppies can do a lot of damage to
your home and property; especially if you do not have the time
nor patience for proper training.  These large breed puppies can
easily knock over young children when playing...many Great Dane
puppies have ended up in Rescue Shelters because the puppy
just plays "too rough"  with little Johnnie or "just grew too big" so
please make sure you are truly ready for a "large breed" dog such
    as the Great Dane.

  • Familiarize yourself with the health issues in Great Dane. Please
become educated on the Great Dane before buying one, this will
be of benefit to you and your new puppy if you decide a Great
    Dane is right for you.

  • Learn what Bloat is and be able to recognize its symptoms...it
could save your Dane and can possibly occur at anytime in a
Dane's lifetime.  Can you afford to spend as much as $2000 or
more in medical expenses if your Great Dane should bloat?
Please read the recent studies and current information about this
life threatening issue on this site   www.gdca.org

  • Emergency care and bloat surgery is very expensive. Bloat can
occur in most large breed dogs. Please remember that any type of
surgical procedure or vet visit  on these large breed dogs will cost
    more due to their size.

  • Find out more about HOD in Great Danes and how you can
possibly minimize this debilitating disease through proper diet.
Also, familiarize yourself with OCD and its debilitating effects.

  • Educate yourself on Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Great Danes which
    is a hereditary disease.

  • Ask the Great Dane breeder about the history of the sire and dam.
What health tests were performed on the sire and dam?
Reputable Great Dane breeders will health screen their breeding
Great Danes and provide a contract that will help protect the
puppy and provide you with a health guarantee for the puppy for a
    specified time.

  • Some of the health screenings that a reputable breeder may have
on their breeding dogs would be for the following possible
hereditary defects: Cardiomyopathy, Hip and/or Elbow Dysplasia,
Thyroid function,  or Eye Certification. By performing at least one
or all of these health screenings on the sire and dam,  the breeder
is doing the best that they can do to insure that they are breeding
    healthy puppies

  • Another test that a breeder may ask for prior to breeding the Sire
or Dam is a blood test for Brucellosis.  Brucellosis is sexually
transmitted by the infected male and/or female. An infected
pregnant dog may abort her puppies two weeks prior to birth or
the pups may die shortly after birth.  Sometimes the pups are lost
early in the pregnancy they are reabsorbed and it is thought that
there may be an issue with infertility.  Pups can occasionally
survive but then they become infected.  It is recommended that all
infected males and females(carriers) are to be neutered or spayed.
Transfer of this disease to humans is possible.

  • Be prepare to spend between $800 and up for a well bred pet
Great Dane puppy, show quality Great Dane puppies will cost
approximately $1200 and up......remember the old  saying  "you
get what you pay for".  It is not cheap for the ethical breeder to
have all or any of the health screenings performed and evaluated
by vets and/ or specialists prior to breeding.  Some of these costs
are reflected in the cost of purchasing one of  their puppies...  "you
get what you pay for".  Don't be afraid to ask the breeder to
personally see the results of the health screenings performed on
the sire and/or dam. Please remember that an ethical breeder
continues to work towards betterment of the breed.

  • A reputable Great Dane breeder will also request that you return
the puppy back to the breeder if at anytime during the dogs life
you are no longer able to care for your Great Dane.  This is to
insure that the Great Dane you purchased from the breeder, will
not end up in a shelter, or in a home that is not suitable for a Great
Dane, or abandoned. A reputable and responsible Great Dane
Breeder will stipulate this in the puppy contract when you
purchase your Great Dane.  A good breeder, will want to insure
that the Great Danes they have bred will be properly cared for
    during the Danes life span.

  • Meet the parents, both if possible (sire and dam)  of the litter....any
Great Dane breeder that will not allow you to pet or meet the
either parent could suggest a temperament or health problem they
do not want you to see.

  • We recommend crate training your Great Dane puppy...but please
make sure to buy a large enough crate for your puppy to move
around in as the puppy continues to grow.  We recommend the
""Colossal"  size crate.  It may cost a little more but the crate size
will fit the entire life of your new puppy.

  • We highly recommend socializing your puppy beginning at
approximately four months of age by enrolling your new puppy in
a  basic obedience class or puppy class.  You would not want your
Great Dane puppy to grow up to be a 120-180 pound dog that has
not had some type of obedience training.

  • Great Danes DO NOT make good outdoor pets. Great Danes should
be raised indoors as a family member with regular daily outdoor
exercise.  Great Danes have difficulty tolerating extreme heat and
cold weather when left outdoors; they do not have an undercoat to
help protect them in harsh weather conditions like other breeds
    may have.

  • Always do your homework before purchasing a new puppy.

  • Great Danes can make wonderful, loving, loyal  family pets and
companions. Please look at our "Links"  that provide other sites
that also contain educational information about the breed to help
you decide if a Great Dane is right for you.
If you are considering purchasing a Great Dane
for yourself or your family  we can not express
how very important it is to do your homework
before buying a Great Dane puppy.
